Watchmaking is a dying art form, but for luxury watchmaker Tourneau, there's an effort underway to keep it ticking. Terry Irby, technical director for the Tourneau, has started a watchmaking program with ambitions to help train at-risk youth become the next generation of master horologists.

Watchmaking employs a lot of skills, both mental and physical, that most people won't naturally develop. Where can you train, how much will it cost, what do you need and how long will it take?

One of the best ways to learn watchmaking is by finding an experienced watchmaker and learning from them on a one-on-one basis. This personalized approach allows for a hands-on learning experience, which is fast and practical. However, finding an apprenticeship can be challenging, and it can be expensive.

The Swiss watch and clock industry appeared in Geneva in the middle of the 16th century. In 1541, the reformer Jean Calvin, by banning the wearing of ornamental objects, in effect forced goldsmiths and other jewellers to turn to a different art: that of watchmaking.
